Listening to web articles with Pocket

30 March 2021

Mozilla’s Pocket service has been around for a long time, but I only just found its killer feature – it lets you listen to articles aloud by generating audio using an AI voice.

When you’re reading an article in the Pocket app for iOS or Android, you can tap the headphone button at the bottom of the screen when you’re reading an article and it will start reading it aloud. The audio that it generates is surprisingly good – it’s not quite as good as Siri or Google Assistant, but it’s almost there.

As someone who has always preferred listening to podcasts over reading books, this is a revelation. As someone who’s been working in digital accessibility for the last few years, this is even more of a revelation!

Presenting information in an alternative format, so that people can consume it in a way that suits them, is what the internet is all about. I love it!
